The identity of artists studios are as distinct as the art that is produced in them. Herbert Read described Piet Mondrain’s London studio as an ‘immaculate white cell’, while Robert Hughes recalls Frank Auerbach’s studio as being ‘a dingy cavern encrusted with paint’. An artist seems to choose a place that reflects their approach and their creations directly. All studios are reflective, steady, private refuges that evolve around the occupant’s own particular needs. I would like to invite you to my space. It’s not very old and it doesn’t have thirty years of painted history like Frank Auerbachs’, but it will one day. Nicholas Romeril 2005 |
